Why V3 to V6 are IMPORTANT growth stages - When the Corn Ear Begins Development

Lots of important things are being formed early in the plant’s life……especially during the V3 to V6 growth stages of development:

 V3 (Three Leaf Collars)

  - All leaves are being formed

  - All ear shoots are being formed

  - All this is happening “beneath the soil”

 V5 (Five Leaf Collars)

  - Leaf initiation is now complete

  - Ear initiation is now complete

  - A microscopic tassel is formed

  - All this is happening “near the soil surface”

V6 (Six Leaf Collars)

  - The growing point is now above ground

Kernel row number (girth) is determined by V5 to V8 (for upper potential ears)
